The 2008 Proof Set sold out at the US Mint on December 15, 2008. This was unexpected and far earlier than anticipated. The sales figures for the set suggest that the final mintage will be the lowest in recent history. Due to the lower mintage and the unexpected sell out, the sets command a premium on the secondary market.

In addition to the regular proof set, the US Mint also issued the 2008 Silver Proof Set, which contains coins struck in 90% silver, the 2008 State Quarters Proof Set, which contains the five quarters released for the year, the 2008 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, which contains the four Presidential Dollars released for the year, and the American Legacy Set, which contains a proof commemorative silver dollar.
